Accessibility at West
West wants to make all visitors feel welcome. Unfortunately, then monumental building is not equally accessible to everyone, with its many stairs and without working elevators. We recommend taking up contact with specific questions, so we can help prepare your visit with the current layout of the exhibitions in mind. Please contact us at info@westdenhaag.nl or call 070 392 53 59. On this page, you will find more general information about accessibility to prepare your visit.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs are welcome in the museum.
Entrance
The main entrance can only be accessed via stairs, but West has a rear entrance that is accessible for wheelchair users. Please contact West on the day of your visit by phone or at the front desk, so one of our staff members can come to open this entrance and guide you to building. You can buy a ticket at the front desk. Here you will also find the cloakroom and lockers. This space is small and hard to access. You are always welcome to bring your coat and bag with you into the exhibitions, but should you prefer storing them in de cloakroom, a staff member can assist you.
Free admission for assistant
You may bring an assistant free of charge if you are unable to navigate the building independently. This person does not need to purchase a ticket.
Lifts
Unfortunately, there are no working elevators in the building. The basement can be reached via an alternative route, but the first floor is inaccessible if you are unable to use stairs. On this floor you will find our education space and also exhibitions. Would you like to know if there currently is an exhibition taking place on the first floor? Please contact us or ask a staff member during your visit.
Restrooms
On the ground floor there are two specially adapted disabled access toilets.
Exhibition spaces
Due tot the layout of the former American embassy, there are significant differences between the various exhibition spaces. The artworks are often arranged in smaller rooms. There is no seating available in most exhibition spaces, except for the Alphabetum (the former library of the embassy).
Less accessible or inaccessible spaces
The auditorium sits below the ground floor and is only accessible via five steps. In the exhibition space left from the entrance there is a platform. It is possible to maneuver around it, and sometimes artworks can be displayed on it.
Guided tours
The regular Bauhaus Tours on Sundays lead past several different floors, necessitating the use of stairs. A modified tour is available which avoids stairs. To book this tour or to learn more, please email or call us.
Stimulus level
Our exhibitions change regularly, and depending on the artworks on view at the time of your visit, the level of sensory stimuli will vary as well. In general, we aim for an average stimulus level, but during special exhibitions or events such as an opening, it can certainly rise to a high level. If you prefer to visit the museum at a quieter moment, we recommend coming on a weekday, either right after opening or towards closing time.
Do you have any suggestions? We would love to hear from you! West is not yet accessible to everyone, and we are working on that. Therefore, we welcome, questions, complaints, and improvements.
